Thats is a very good question, and you are not alone in that. It is somthing that every Christian has to face and I believe that dieing to yourself is a day to day prosess it is not somthing that we can aquire overnight it's a struggle. The fact that this question is being asked proves that there is a desire change which means that the prosess has allready started. This scripture means a lot to me because it provides fundamentals on how to guage your progress.
Psalms 1:1 Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
What David is saying is, a man that does not take part in ungodly things, associate himself with sinners or allow himself to be influenced by ungodliness, he will be blessed of God. So, if we are not entertaining ungodliness, than there is only one other option.
Psalms 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night.
So to guage where we are is by takeing an overview of what we delite in and that will be what we meditate on. In other words what is our affection geard toward.
Colossians 3:2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
1 Corrinthians 10:23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
You may not be partaking in sinnful activities but how do you spend your time? is it expedient? Is it edifying to the body of Christ? A man that delighteth in the word will meditate on it and, because he meditates on it the more he will delight in it. And the result will be.
Psalms 1:3 He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.
A tree that is deep rooted near a source of water will never have to worry about times of drought. The tree speaking of ourselves and the water, the Word which is Christ and the drought speaking of trials and such. So if we make a concious desicion to take God's word and meditate on it, the more we will delight in it. And find that the things of the outside world, fade away and in that, you will become fruitful. I hope this was able help in some way, It is a simple way of looking at it but it helped me to think about the everyday thoughts I entertain. Sure I understand that we have to live in this world but, we don't have to be apart of it. We can still choose what we listen to, what we look at, where we go. And because we profess and confess to be Christians and we should, God will allow satan to tempt you in those areas of weakness to see what you will do with what God has shown to you through revelation. And it will most likley be when you don't feel like a Christian. But trials come to strenghen your faith and you should never look at it in a negative way. In fact if you are going through a trial know that it is God's grace working in your life to perfect you. Just to prove to satan "heap it on buddy!" I will have overcomers because, I have allready overcome sin through my perfect sacrifice in Christ, Jesus. So it is more of an oppertunity than a trial.
1 Corinthians 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
May God bless you. and if you have any other questions reguarding this or any other topic please feel free to ask.
